DLR MAPHEUS-17 Set for October Suborbital Window
The German Aerospace Center (DLR) has confirmed the MAPHEUS-17 research mission is scheduled for launch from Esrange Space Center as early as October 1, 2024.

The German Aerospace Center (DLR) has entered final countdown protocols for the MAPHEUS-17 suborbital research mission. According to European Spaceflight, the launch window at Sweden’s Esrange Space Center is scheduled to open on 1 October and remain active through 8 October. A status update released on 16 September confirmed that essential preflight validation tests are complete, clearing the way for the mission’s final integration phase.
Vehicle Configuration
The mission will utilize a two-stage solid-fuel launch vehicle. The primary propulsion is provided by a Red Kite first stage, a motor developed by Bayern-Chemie under DLR contract to secure independent European suborbital capability. This architecture is designed to loft the science payload into the upper atmosphere to facilitate high-altitude research.
Operational Objectives
Managed by DLR’s Mobile Rocket Base (MORABA), the MAPHEUS (Material Research under Weightlessness for Experts) program has served as a critical testbed for European science since 2009. The primary objective of the MAPHEUS-17 flight is to provide approximately six minutes of high-quality microgravity.
Experiments onboard will span several disciplines, including:
Materials Science: Investigating fluid dynamics and solidification without gravitational interference.
Life Science: Analyzing biological responses to the space environment.
* Tech Demo: Validating hardware and sensors for future orbital missions.
This mission continues DLR’s strategy of providing cost-effective, frequent access to microgravity, bypassing the complex logistics required for International Space Station (ISS) utilization.
