Mission logging for the final week of Q3 2026 highlights significant progress in orbital imaging and navigational resilience. According to ESA, the Solar wind Magnetosphere Ionosphere Link Explorer (SMILE) mission has successfully transmitted its first ultraviolet imaging data. The captured sequence provides high-resolution visualization of an auroral substorm, a critical phenomenon in the study of Earth’s magnetic environment and solar wind interactions.

Simultaneously, ground operations shifted focus to terrestrial interference challenges. In Norway, an ESA technical team participated in Jammertest 2026. This exercise is designed to evaluate how satellite navigation hardware responds to heavy signal jamming and spoofing in hostile electronic environments. Data retrieved from this field test will inform the hardening of future PNT (Positioning, Navigation, and Timing) systems.

Institutional transitions were also finalized during this period. Laurent Jaffart has been officially appointed as the Director of Resilience, Navigation, and Connectivity (D/RNC). This leadership change, announced via Press Release N° 5–2026, aligns with the agency's strategic focus on securing European space infrastructure against emerging orbital and cyber threats.

ESA continues to coordinate these efforts across its 23 Member States, maintaining the European gateway to space through ESTEC, ESOC, and ESRIN establishments. The agency remains committed to transforming space investment into actionable data for global benefit.
