Italian orbital logistics leader D-Orbit has formalized a significant launch-services agreement with Japanese microsatellite developer ArkEdge Space. The contract, announced July 8, mandates a series of deployments utilizing D-Orbit’s flagship ION Satellite Carrier, signaling an aggressive expansion into the Asia-Pacific (APAC) theatre.
According to SpaceNews, the multi-launch campaign is scheduled for 2027 and 2028, targeting Sun-Synchronous Orbit (SSO). While the specific volume of satellites remains classified, the operational cadence is designed to reinforce ArkEdge’s constellation infrastructure.
STRATEGIC ALLIANCE: EU-APAC CORRIDOR
The deal was facilitated by Marubeni Corp., a Japanese conglomerate that serves as both an investor and sales development partner for D-Orbit. By leveraging Marubeni's regional network, D-Orbit aims to establish its ION platform as the primary logistics backbone for Japan's accelerating small-satellite ecosystem.
Matteo Andreas Lorenzoni, D-Orbit’s Orbital Access Business Unit director, emphasized that the contract reflects a shift toward “precise orbital slots.” As constellation operators move beyond simple rideshare accessibility, the value of dedicated in-orbit deployment has transitioned from a cost-center to a mission-critical utility.
SYSTEM SPECIFICATIONS
ArkEdge Space, established in 2018, specializes in diverse microsatellite applications including maritime communications, Earth observation, and deep-space infrastructure.
D-Orbit’s ION vehicle maintains a robust flight heritage; as of July 2026, the carrier has completed 23 missions, successfully deploying 144 satellites and hosting 83 distinct payloads. This contract effectively pairs European expertise in in-orbit maneuverability with Japan’s high-volume satellite manufacturing capabilities.
