Mission Status: Sols 5043-5049

NASA’s Curiosity rover has successfully transitioned into its next primary sampling phase within the Upper Gediz Vallis ridge. According to NASA Breaking News, the rover has reached a localized workspace designated as ‘Nazca,’ where it is currently executing a high-resolution pre-drill assessment.

Analytical Protocol

The mission team is utilizing the Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI) and the Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer (APXS) to characterize the surface chemistry and texture of the Nazca target. These instruments provide the necessary baseline data to determine if the site is suitable for a full-depth drill hole. The objective is to retrieve a pulverized rock sample from the interior of the ridge, which will then be delivered to the rover’s internal laboratories—the Chemistry and Mineralogy (CheMin) instrument and the Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) suite.

Strategic Objectives

This drilling campaign aims to uncover the geochemical history of the Gediz Vallis ridge, a feature believed to have formed during the final stages of water activity in Gale Crater. By analyzing the subsurface material, scientists hope to resolve whether the ridge was shaped by debris flows or fluvial processes. During the multi-sol sequence, the rover will also maintain atmospheric monitoring and long-range imaging of the surrounding topography to assist with future traverse planning. Following the completion of the Nazca drill, Curiosity will resume its ascent of Mount Sharp.
