Operational Pivot at LC-36

Blue Origin has confirmed a strategic shift in its launch pad procedures as it races to restore the New Glenn flight manifest. Following the catastrophic pad explosion on May 28, the company is abandoning the transporter-erector system destroyed in the blast in favor of a hybrid concept of operations (CONOPS).

According to SpaceNews, the new approach bypasses the need to rebuild the hardware that failed. Instead, the launch vehicle will be transported horizontally to the pad without its payload. A crane will then lift the rocket into a vertical orientation for installation. The mission payload is subsequently moved to the pad and integrated vertically via the same crane system.

Return to Flight Timeline

CEO Dave Limp stated that this hybrid CONOPS was originally developed for the future 9×4 New Glenn variant. By accelerating its implementation, the company aims to be launch-ready from the rebuilt Launch Complex 36 before year-end. While industry analysts call the seven-month recovery timeline "aggressive," NASA remains committed to the vehicle for its Blue Moon lunar lander program.

Investigation Status

The root cause of the May anomaly remains under investigation. Preliminary data points to the first-stage aft section. This focus raises potential concerns for United Launch Alliance, as their Vulcan Centaur utilizes the same BE-4 engines. NASA and the Space Force are currently embedded within the investigation team to ensure the integrity of the hardware before the updated 2024 or early 2025 launch windows.
