The European Space Agency (ESA) has convened a technical briefing to detail the next operational phase for BepiColombo, the joint European-Japanese mission to the solar system's innermost planet. According to ESA, the spacecraft is approaching a critical milestone in its complex multi-year cruise, preparing for a maneuver designed to refine its trajectory before eventual orbital insertion.
BepiColombo, a collaborative venture between ESA and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), consists of two independent orbiters: the Mercury Planetary Orbiter (MPO) and the Mercury Magnetospheric Orbiter (MMO/Mio). The mission is currently navigating the intense gravitational environment of the inner solar system, utilizing gravity assist flybys to shed velocity.
Operational Parameters
Agency officials confirmed that the upcoming milestone involves a high-precision flyby, a necessity due to Mercury's proximity to the Sun's massive gravity well. This phase is critical for ensuring the spacecraft can be captured into its science orbit in the coming years. Failure to meet current trajectory requirements would jeopardize the mission’s final entry.
