The joint mission between the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), BepiColombo, has officially begun its arrival sequence at Mercury. According to the ESA YouTube broadcast, this phase marks the culmination of a seven-year journey through the inner solar system, transitioning the spacecraft from its long-duration cruise mode into the complex maneuvers required for orbital capture.

The Gravity Assist Strategy

Mercury’s proximity to the Sun presents a significant kinetic energy challenge. To counteract the Sun’s massive gravitational pull, BepiColombo utilizes a series of planetary flybys. These maneuvers act as a natural braking system, shedding the velocity necessary to allow the craft to be captured by Mercury’s weak gravity without exhausting its propellant reserves. The current arrival operations represent the final sequence of these gravity-assisted adjustments.

Scientific Objectives and Payload

Once safely in orbit, the mission will deploy two distinct components: the Mercury Planetary Orbiter (MPO) and the Mercury Magnetospheric Orbiter (Mio). These units are tasked with mapping the planet’s surface composition, analyzing its internal structure, and investigating the interaction between Mercury’s magnetic field and the solar wind. Data gathered during this final approach phase is already providing refined telemetry for the high-resolution imaging and spectroscopic instruments onboard. The terminal phase remains high-risk, requiring precise execution of automated commands to ensure the craft survives the thermal extremes of the Hermean environment.
