AUST-RANGE: Spinifex Space Opens Queensland Facilities

Spinifex Space has officially entered the private range market, offering end-to-end suborbital launch campaigns and Test and Evaluation (T&E) infrastructure from southwestern Queensland. According to Payload, the firm is a spin-out from Black Sky Industries, an Australian developer of solid rocket motors and propellant.

While Spinifex does not manufacture launch vehicles, it provides the critical regulatory and physical infrastructure required for flight. The company’s assets are divided into two primary nodes:

• ▸Black Sands Test Range: Focused on energetics, kinetic effectors, and hypersonic vehicle testing.
• ▸Outback Space Port: Situated at the MAXQ facility, this site spans over 3 million acres and supports both vertical and horizontal suborbital launches.

STRATEGIC LANDSCAPE

Corporate transparency remains low; the company has not disclosed its executive leadership or ownership structure, and range license holders remain unconfirmed. However, the operational scope is vast, covering static fires, destructive testing, and hypersonics. This positioning places Spinifex as a commercial alternative to the government-run Woomera range.

The venture coincides with Australia’s pivot toward domestic sovereign capability. The government recently allocated AU$126.9M for solid rocket motor production, involving Northrop Grumman Australia, and established new facilities with Lockheed Martin and Kongsberg.

Spinifex’s trajectory suggests a bet on high-demand testing scarcity: as Australia ramps up missile and rocket production, available acreage to launch them becomes the primary industry bottleneck.
