Astranis Secures Dedicated Falcon 9 Mission for Block 4 Fleet Expansion
Astranis has upgraded its SpaceX launch contract to a dedicated Falcon 9 mission in 2028, deploying its entire Block 4 production run of six MicroGEO satellites directly into orbit.

MISSION UPDATE: DIRECT INJECTION
San Francisco-based Astranis has finalized an amendment to its existing SpaceX launch contract, upgrading its fourth scheduled launch to a dedicated mission. According to SpaceNews, the deal secures the full payload capacity of a Falcon 9 rocket for the entire Block 4 production run, slated for liftoff in 2028.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
The mission profile involves the deployment of six MicroGEO satellites. To achieve precise orbital placement, Astranis will utilize an Impulse Helios upper stage to facilitate a direct-inject maneuver into Geostationary Orbit (GEO). This deployment will increase the company’s total orbital fleet to 16 units, following the 10 satellites produced across Blocks 1, 2, and 3.
OPERATIONAL DEMAND
Astranis CEO John Gedmark confirmed that the transition to dedicated launches is a response to escalating demand from commercial and national security sectors. The company’s backlog now exceeds $1 billion, as sovereign governments and enterprises seek dedicated space infrastructure—prioritizing uptime and data security over shared capacity.
Beyond traditional telecommunications, the Block 4 satellites will support the company’s expansion into space domain awareness (SDA) and maneuverability. This follow-up to their recently introduced Perceptor platform highlights a shift toward multi-mission high-orbit infrastructure designed to safeguard critical assets in GEO. Several initial customers for the Block 4 run have already been secured, though their identities remain classified for a future disclosure.
