Artemis II Lunar Crew Inspects ESM Systems at ESTEC
The full Artemis II astronaut crew visited ESA's technical heart in the Netherlands to review the European Service Modules powering their upcoming voyage around the Moon.

The Artemis II flight crew—NASA Commander Reid Wiseman, Pilot Victor Glover, Mission Specialist Christina Koch, and CSA Mission Specialist Jeremy Hansen—successfully concluded a strategic technical visit to the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) in Noordwijk, Netherlands. According to ESA, the delegation engaged directly with the workforce responsible for the European Service Modules (ESM), the critical hardware ensuring life support and propulsion for the Orion spacecraft.
European Infrastructure Dependencies
While Artemis II is a NASA-led mission, it is fundamentally dependent on European engineering. The ESM, built by Airbus as the prime contractor for ESA, provides the spacecraft with vital consumables, including water, oxygen, and nitrogen, while regulating the internal thermal environment. During their time at the ESTEC facility, the crew reviewed the status of ESM-2, which is currently integrated with the Orion capsule in preparation for the first crewed mission to the lunar vicinity in over fifty years.
Operational Integration
Beyond hardware inspection, the visit underscored the collaborative operational reality of the Artemis program. ESA’s role extends past manufacturing; European mission control teams and engineers sustain the infrastructure that will allow the four astronauts to conduct a lunar flyby. This trajectory is designed to validate Orion’s life-support systems in deep space. The interactions at ESTEC allowed the crew to verify hardware ergonomics and technical specifications with the engineers on the ground.
