According to ESA, the delegation was onsite to conduct a primary hardware review of the European Service Module (ESM), a critical sub-system of the Orion spacecraft.

The ESM serves as the Orion vehicle’s central nervous system. Engineered and built by European industry partners under ESA oversight, the module delivers propulsion, thermal regulation, and life support—supplying water and oxygen to the cabin. For the Artemis II mission, which marks the first crewed flight of the program, the ESM’s performance is non-negotiable. Lunar Trajectory Realities
During their visit to the ESTEC facilities, the astronauts inspected the engineering models and test benches utilized to verify the module's resilience against the vacuum and extreme thermal fluctuations of cislunar space. The Artemis II mission is slated to transport the crew around the Moon and back to Earth, a ten-day journey that relies entirely on the ESM’s primary engine and 32 auxiliary thrusters for steering and life-cycle maintenance.
