The Artemis II mission crew, consisting of NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and CSA astronaut Jeremy Hansen, has completed a critical hardware inspection at the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) in Noordwijk, Netherlands. Systems Integration and Propulsion
During the briefing at ESA's largest technical facility, the crew reviewed the status of the ESM-2, the power and propulsion unit that will sustain the Orion spacecraft during its lunar trajectory. The ESM is a corner-piece of international cooperation, providing electricity, water, oxygen, and nitrogen to the crew capsule, as well as maintaining thermal control. The mission—the first crewed flight of the Artemis program—will see the crew travel approximately 10,300 kilometers beyond the far side of the Moon.
Testing and Verification Protocols
The astronauts engaged with engineers to understand the nuances of the hardware they will rely on 400,000 kilometers from Earth.
