Strategic Shift Demanded

Victor Glover, pilot for the upcoming Artemis 2 mission, is calling for a tactical pivot in NASA’s lunar landing strategy. During the NASA Exploration Science Forum at Ames Research Center, Glover argued that the agency should return to “familiar” equatorial regions for its first crewed landings rather than committing immediately to the treacherous lunar south pole.

The Risk Factor

According to SpaceNews, Glover’s primary concern centers on crew safety and mission timeline. He noted that the current plan for polar landings utilizes a near-rectilinear halo orbit which could trap astronauts on the surface for up to a week before an ascent is possible.

"If an appendix ruptures on landing day, you’re stuck for a week," Glover warned. He emphasized that equatorial landing sites facilitate much faster emergency extractions and provide better lighting conditions. In contrast, the south pole’s low sun angle creates extreme, long shadows that complicate visibility during Suited Extravehicular Activity (SEVA) and landing maneuvers.

Envelope Expansion

Comparing the mission to test flight programs, Glover advocated for a stepwise approach to “retire risk” incrementally. By mastering daylight equatorial landings first—similar to the Apollo-era profile—the agency could build the operational experience necessary for the high-difficulty polar terrain.

Agency Response

While the south pole remains the primary target due to water-ice deposits, NASA’s leadership has signaled some flexibility. Amit Kshatriya, Associate Administrator, recently indicated that performance specifications for early landings are being opened up to allow for alternative orbits and sites. SpaceNews reports that SpaceX’s revised Starship landing plan already shifts away from the Gateway-centric halo orbit toward low lunar orbit, potentially simplifying logistics for early Artemis sorties.
