SSC Space and Firefly Aerospace have established a 2028 operational window for the first orbital launch from Sweden’s Esrange Space Center. This milestone signifies the transition of the northern facility from a suborbital range to a frontline orbital site for European sovereign launch capacity. According to SpaceNews, the timeline follows significant infrastructure progress at Launch Complex 3C (LC-3C), including the completion of integration buildings, payload processing facilities, and tracking systems.
The Transatlantic Framework
The mission is supported by a new Technical Safeguards Agreement (TSA) and a Memorandum of Cooperation between the Swedish National Space Agency and the U.S. FAA. These regulatory frameworks streamline licensing for American launch vehicles on Swedish soil. Firefly CEO Jason Kim describes the partnership as a "launch as a franchise" strategy, providing dedicated orbital access via the flight-proven Alpha rocket without the overhead of constructing proprietary facilities.
Defense and Strategic Autonomy
Security remains a primary driver for the 2028 target. The Swedish Defense Materiel Administration (FMV) has secured a $21.5 million (SEK 209 million) contract to build pre-launch capabilities for the Swedish Armed Forces. Located 200 km north of the Arctic Circle, Esrange offers optimal trajectories for sun-synchronous and polar orbits, vital for modern Earth observation and national security assets.
While infrastructure for Firefly’s Block II Alpha is nearing completion, potential regulatory hurdles remain. U.S. officials have expressed concerns regarding the forthcoming EU Space Act, which may introduce friction for non-EU launch providers. Despite this, SSC CEO Charlotta Sund confirmed that major Swedish domestic obstacles have been resolved, shifting focus to payload integration for the 2028 debut.
