DATA LOSS REPORT: SARDINIA DROP TEST

The European Space Agency has formally addressed the failure of a critical Space Rider recovery system trial. According to European Spaceflight, the incident occurred on 6 October over a military testing range in Sardinia, Italy.

The mission profile required a full-scale test vehicle to be released from a helicopter at a ceiling of three kilometers. Post-release telemetry indicates that while the initial drogue parachute deployed as intended, the main parafoil detached from the airframe during its own deployment sequence. Without the necessary drag, the test model impacted the surface at terminal velocity.

HARDWARE STATUS

Géraldine Naja, ESA’s Director of Space Transportation, confirmed the loss of the test vehicle during a media briefing on 22 October. While the hardware suffered significant damage, the agency emphasized that the primary objective of these trials is to identify failure modes before orbital operations commence.

PROGRAM IMPACT

Despite the catastrophic landing, ESA officials state that the mission timeline remains shielded. The agency does not anticipate that the loss of this specific test unit will delay the overall development of the reusable orbital vehicle. Investigators are currently focused on the detachment mechanism of the parafoil to ensure flight-ready hardware does not share this vulnerability. Space Rider remains Europe's primary solution for autonomous, multi-month orbital research and return capability.
