Terminal Entry: Amazon Expansion

Amazon has formally signaled its intent to dominate the direct-to-device (D2D) market. According to SpaceNews, the company filed an application with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on July 24 to deploy a constellation of 5,105 satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO). This secondary system is designed to bypass traditional terrestrial infrastructure, delivering text, mobile data, and IoT connectivity directly to smartphones.

Orbital Parameters

The proposed fleet will occupy staggered altitudes between 510 and 580 kilometers, with inclinations ranging from 56 to 84 degrees. While the filing reserves orbital slots for up to 11,000 units, Amazon specifies the operational shell will not exceed 5,105 satellites. These assets are projected to have a six-to-eight-year lifespan. Upon decommissioning, spacecraft will lower orbits to 360 kilometers for natural atmospheric reentry within 60 days.

Spectrum Synergy

Connectivity will leverage the 1.6 and 2.4 GHz bands—spectrum currently held by Globalstar. This technical integration follows Amazon’s April agreement to acquire Globalstar for approximately $11 billion, a transaction slated for completion in 2027. The D2D system is intended to function in tandem with Amazon’s existing broadband LEO project and Globalstar’s legacy HIBLEO assets.

Industrial Context

Amazon’s move solidifies its position against rivals like SpaceX and Rocket Lab—the latter recently acquiring Iridium for $8 billion. By utilizing Globalstar’s established spectrum rights, Amazon avoids the regulatory hurdles recently placed on companies attempting to share existing bands. The system aims to fill coverage gaps in remote regions, providing essential emergency and messaging services globally.
