CORE HARDWARE LOGISTICS: LEIDEN TO ROTTERDAM

Airbus Netherlands has confirmed the dispatch of the first lightweight Vulcain Aft Bay for the Ariane 6 heavy-lift vehicle. According to European Spaceflight, the structural assembly—designated Flight Model 16 (FM16)—is currently in transit to ArianeGroup facilities in France via the port of Rotterdam.

This delivery marks a primary milestone in the rollout of the Ariane 6 Block 2 upgrades. The Aft Bay is a critical structural interface located at the base of the rocket's core stage, responsible for mounting the Vulcain 2.1 engine and distributing mechanical loads during the high-thrust ascent phase.

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS AND DEPLOYMENT

While the Block 2 initiative focuses on mass reduction to enhance overall payload capacity, reports suggest the weight savings achieved with this specific iteration may be more conservative than early projections indicated. The shift to lightweight structures is essential for the European Space Agency’s (ESA) strategy to maintain the launcher's competitiveness in the commercial and institutional market.

Rob Postma, President of Airbus Netherlands, noted via social media that this upgraded hardware is slated for its orbital debut in 2027. This timeline aligns with the broader integration schedule for the Ariane 6 Block 2 configuration, which aims to optimize the performance of the liquid-fueled core stage. Further testing and integration will proceed at ArianeGroup before the component is cleared for flight operations at the Guiana Space Centre.
